ALERTS

New England Baptist Hospital DOES NOT have an emergency department or urgent care centers.

Spine Surgery

The New England Baptist Hospital Spine Section is comprised of Orthopedic Spine Surgeons, Neurosurgeons and non-operative spine specialists. Surgeons work closely with non-operative spine specialists in our Spine Center to help patients avoid surgery where possible. If surgery is needed, we provide leading edge surgical treatment for a variety of conditions.

The Spine Surgery Section at NEBH is unique in that it combines both orthopedic and neurosurgical spine specialists into a single cohesive group. The traditional model in many hospitals is to have separate orthopedic and neurosurgery spine divisions, who do not work together. The combined approach employed at NEBH provides a number of benefits. The varied background and experience of the surgeons encourages the sharing of ideas for improving patient care. The surgeons frequently discuss the best strategies for individual surgical patients among each other, giving their patients access to a larger pool of expertise and knowledge. Patients are frequently internally referred to the surgeon whose skill set may best suite them.

There are several areas that surgeons specialize in:

Cervical and Lumbar Degenerative Disease

These are the most common disorders we see, from outpatient lumbar microdiscectomies and laminectomies, to more extensive cervical and lumbar fusion operations among other procedures.

Scoliosis, Spinal Deformity and Complex Spinal Revision Surgery

Annually, hundreds of patients who have complex spinal deformities such as adult degenerative scoliosis, prior lumbar or cervical fusions or even previously treated childhood/teenage scoliosis undergo successful surgery. The surgeons at NEBH frequently receive referrals of patients from elsewhere in New England for the surgical care of complex spinal conditions such as these.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimally invasive procedures benefit some patients by potentially facilitating quicker recoveries from surgery as a result of smaller incisions and less soft tissue disruption. Procedures frequently performed by NEBH surgeons include posterior cervical foraminotomies, lumbar laminectomies, endoscopic spine surgery and a number of lumbar fusions procedures, including lateral lumbar fusions (such as DLIF/OLIF/XLIF procedures).

Image Guided Surgery

Computer and Image guided systems are available to guide the placement of implants into the spine where necessary for certain procedures. This can, in some cases, be more accurate than traditional means that do not use such systems. NEBH has a long and extensive track record in using a variety of state-of-the-art navigation systems, and currently is a regional leader in use of the Medtronic Stealth navigation system and the Medtronic Mazor Robotic system.
