New England Baptist Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Move Ahead to Implement Joint Venture Partnership with Today’s HPC Vote Allowing Entry into the BIDCO Network

The Massachusetts Health Policy Commission today issued its Cost Market Impact Review Final Report, clearing the path for New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH) and its physician group to join the Beth Israel Deaconess Care Organization (BIDCO), an Accountable Care Organization and physician and hospital network, as a member. NEBH will be the first specialty hospital in BIDCO.

“We are thrilled that the HPC has recognized the importance of the Baptist’s brand of orthopedic care to the market and the significant role it can play as a part of a network that is committed to delivering the highest quality and greatest value to patients across the region.” said Trish Hannon, President and Chief Executive Officer, New England Baptist Hospital.

“Together with our physician colleagues in BIDCO and the Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians (HMFP) at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, we will be able to reach new levels of outstanding patient care, and we can bring the Baptist brand experience to more patients in locations that are convenient for them.” said David Mattingly, Surgeon in Chief, NEBH and President, New England Baptist Clinical Integration Organization (NEBCIO). “This collaboration will undoubtedly bring higher quality and higher value care to more people of the Commonwealth.”

“I’m really pleased that the Health Policy Commission found that the New England Baptist Hospital and its affiliated physicians joining the BIDCO network have the potential to improve health care delivery, access, and quality in the Commonwealth,” said Jeffrey Hulburt, President and CEO of BIDCO. “We look forward to welcoming the New England Baptist Hospital and its physicians to BIDCO and working together to positively impact the communities they serve.”

With New England Baptist’s entry into the BIDCO network, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, New England Baptist Hospital and its physician groups will be able to better realize the goals of their partnership announced two years ago.

In 2014, the boards of NEBH and BIDMC entered into a partnership to create a premiere system of orthopedic and musculoskeletal care, education and clinical research. The strategic relationship brings together NEBH’s clinical expertise and brand as a premier orthopedic specialty hospital, BIDMC’s depth and breadth in clinical care, including musculoskeletal care, teaching and research across a broad range of specialty services, and the BIDCO physician network. The two institutions remain independent and the relationship is expected to grow over time.

“We are grateful to the Health Policy Commission for its thorough review,” said Kevin Tabb, MD, President and CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. “We look forward to continuing to build a collaborative program with New England Baptist Hospital that will be a national leader in orthopedic and musculoskeletal care.”
