BOSTON – New England Baptist Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Advanced Certification Spine Surgery by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care.
New England Baptist Hospital underwent a rigorous, onsite review for two days, December 14 and 15. During the visit, a team of Joint Commission reviewers evaluated compliance with related certification standards including program structure, delivery of care, care coordination, and performance measurement. Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The reviewers also conducted onsite observations and interviews.
“Advanced Certification Spine Surgery recognizes health care organizations committed to fostering continuous quality improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, chief operating officer, Accreditation and Certification Operations, and chief nursing executive, The Joint Commission. “We commend New England Baptist Hospital for using certification to reduce variation in its clinical processes and to strengthen its program structure and management framework for spine surgery patients.”
“We are honored to receive this recognition from The Joint Commission, especially when you consider we are just one of only four hospitals to receive it,” said David Passafaro, president of New England Baptist Hospital. “We are proud of our program. Our orthopedic experts are some of the best nationwide providing extraordinary care to our patients across New England. This honor recognizes their hard work and commitment to excellent, compassionate care.”
Chima Ohaegabulm, MD, Chief of Spine Surgery at NEBH, said “People come to us looking to relieve their back pain and improve their quality of life. We are passionate about helping them and we are honored that our commitment has been recognized.”
The Joint Commission only began offering Advanced Certification of Spine Surgery in collaboration with the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons on July 1, 2021. New England Baptist Hospital is one of the first hospitals to receive the honor. Additionally, in May 2018, NEBH achieved certification as a national center for Advanced Hip and Knee Surgery by the Joint Commission, one of very few hospitals in the country to achieve this certification.
