New England Baptist Hospital DOES NOT have an emergency department or urgent care centers.

Eric Freedland, MD

When Eric Freedland, MD—an emergency medicine physician who now works in the pharmaceutical industry—found out he would need a hip replacement, finding the right doctor and hospital was of the utmost importance to him.

“I did a lot of research before picking the surgeon and hospital I wanted to have my surgery at,” says Dr. Freedland.

Dr. Freedland’s research, as well as recommendations from other physicians after more conservative treatment failed, led him to joint replacement specialist and Vice Chair of Orthopedic Research, Carl Talmo, MD.

“Dr. Talmo stood out in my mind for a few reasons. I liked the approach that he used, the fact that he is actively involved in research, the results he got, and his reputation.”

New England Baptist Hospital also made an impression.

“I knew immediately that I was in good hands. As a doctor, being able to turn over my care with no hesitations was total peace of mind. The hospital was very well organized, impressively so. Every step of the way, from registration, to the nurses in the operating and recovery rooms, the anesthesia team, all the physical and occupational therapists, everybody was super. And they really worked with me.”

One of Dr. Freedland’s goals was to begin his recovery at home as soon as possible.

“When I woke up in the recovery room, I was already feeling great. Within an hour or two, I went up to my room, and began working with physical and occupational therapy. I wasn’t going to push it if they recommended I spend the night, but they were very cooperative in trying to meet my goals and desires, as long as it made sense. I ended up being able to go home the same day I had the surgery.”

Back at home, Dr. Freedland’s recovery has gone incredibly smooth. Within two days, he was off of crutches and taking walks around the block. Eight weeks after surgery, he briskly walked a 5K race with his family.

“My experience has been tremendous. Dr. Talmo and NEBH surpassed all of my expectations. The experience, from the pre-operative period through the procedure and the recovery, was a piece of cake. It has been a very positive experience. I’m very grateful.”
