Stephen Tillinghast

Knee Surgery

“I am the first and last guy you see at the hotel—I make the impression,” says Stephen Tillinghast, the 30-year veteran doorman at Boston’s Four Seasons Hotel and a well-known Beantown fixture.

Stephen walks miles every day in his job, hailing taxis, handling luggage, parking cars, and providing guests and tourists with advice and directions.

“This job is physically demanding, plus I try to get in 20 miles on my mountain bike before work every day.”

That’s why when an old skiing injury flared up and caused excruciating pain in his knees, Stephen switched roles: instead of giving directions, he asked a friend for them—and followed them straight to New England Baptist Hospital for help.

“Thanks to the Baptist, I’m at the top of my game physically—my knees don’t hurt,” says Stephen. “The personal service makes you know you’re being taken care of; you’re not just a number. And the Baptist is head and shoulders above the rest in terms of the care.”

Now, Stephen says, much like he’d recommend Boston’s best cafe down the street for lunch, he recommends New England Baptist to friends and hotel guests alike when they complain of musculoskeletal pain.

“In my job, you’re only as good as the last person you helped,” says Stephen. “It’s unbelievable; they’re all like new when they come back to thank me for suggesting the Baptist.”
