Take a Leap to a Better You

Every four years during a leap year an extra day is added to the calendar. A normal year has 365 days and to help synchronize the calendar year with the solar year (how long it takes the earth to complete its orbit around the sun), an extra day is added to February.

Here are a few tips on how to make the most of your extra hours of the day from Susan Judge Burns, NP:

Make yourself a priority
February 29 is set aside to synchronize calendars and create balance. This is something that could be applied to your own life. Take advantage of the extra hours of the day to make you a priority. For example, schedule the doctor’s appointment you have been putting off. Take the time to pamper yourself. It might be a good time to think about making a personal or professional change.

Do something good
You can use the extra time to help others. Find a service project or a place to volunteer. If you can’t find the time on February 29, decide to make the commitment on that day.

Make a commitment to get healthy
Take advantage of the extra time to not only make fitness a part of your day but to support a good cause at the same time. You could participate in a run or walk that raises money and brings awareness to a cause. For example, support the Arthritis Foundation. Over 50 million Americans have arthritis, making it the number one cause of disability in the country. Funds raised through an Arthritis Walk help people today, by supporting Arthritis Foundation programs, research and advocacy initiatives as well as helping to find a cure. Decide to use February 29th as a motivator to participate in a future event and find a cause that you are passionate about.  

Have Fun and Enjoy Yourself
You can do something for yourself such as reading that book you have been putting off or seeing that movie that you wanted to see. Take a “Leap of Faith”- Try something new and step out of your comfort zone. Take advantage of the extra day by doing something that you wouldn’t normally do.

Leap into Action
A great way to have fun and gain health benefits at the same time is through exercise and physical activity.  Exercise has many benefits including controlling weight and fighting diseases and health conditions. Physical Activity can also improve your mood and boost energy. Encourage family and friends to get moving. Exercising in a group is a great motivator and social activity.

Time is precious
Your time is valuable. Spend it with the people you love and whose company you enjoy. Don’t miss your chance on Monday, February 29. You won’t have another opportunity until February 2020.
