4 Fun Ways to Exercise at the BeachMay 29, 2015
Exercise is an important part of staying healthy, but it doesn’t always have to be a bore. Dr. Sharon Bassi, physiatrist at the NEBH Spine Center, recommends the following activities to stay active next time you spend a day at the beach.
Before you begin any exercise, make sure to warm up by doing jumping jacks or running or walking in place for three to five minutes. You will also want to spend a few minutes stretching.
Take a Walk
Walking on the beach is terrific exercise. Sand provides resistance, which makes it more demanding than walking on hard surfaces and burns more calories. Additionally, instead of pounding your joints and feet on hard pavement, sand acts as a natural cushion. For an added exercise, pick up seashells during your walk-repeatedly bending down will work your legs and core.
Go for a Swim
Swimming is a great all-around activity that builds endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness. Another benefit is that the buoyancy of the water supports the body’s weight, which reduces stress on the joints.
Play a Sport
Playing volleyball, paddleball, or tossing a Frisbee are great ways to stay active on the beach. You will burn calories as well as work your arms, legs, and core by reaching, running, and throwing. The beach is also a relaxing place to do some stretching or your favorite yoga poses.
Plan an Activity
Planning an activity at the beach is a great way to get a quality workout in while having fun. Try taking a surfing class or renting a kayak or stand up paddleboard.
Don’t forget the basics when you’re at the beach. Use sunscreen with sun protective factor (SPF) 15 or higher, and both UVA and UVB protection. Seek shade when possible, and make sure to wear a hat, sunglasses, and long sleeves. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
Remember to relax and enjoy your day at the beach!
