4 Tips For Keeping Up with the Grandchildren This Summer
July 31, 2014
Keeping up with energetic grandchildren during the summer can seem like a daunting task. Being prepared and planning ahead can make the experience a much more fun and enjoyable one. NEBH experts advise these 4 tips to stay energized and prevent pain.
1. Pace and Plan Your Activities
Try to plan a schedule where you can alternate days of activity and rest to avoid overtaxing yourself. Look for activities you can enjoy too, like swimming. Swimming is a great way for people of all ages to exercise, as it is easy on the joints, increases flexibility and can increase heart health.
2. Use Proper Lifting Techniques
If you are picking up and carrying a baby or child, make sure to lift properly. To do this: Separate your feet so they are shoulder width apart. Bend at the knees, tighten your stomach muscles and lift with your leg muscles, not your back, as you stand up.
3. Remember to Wear Proper Footwear
When spending time with your grandchildren, you will probably be walking around more than you are used to. Make sure to wear comfortable sneakers and limit the amount of time you wear flat sandals or flip-flops that do not provide arch support. Walking on a hard surface without the proper arch support can eventually lead to fallen arches, causing pain, swollen ankles, and weak lower leg muscles.
4. Maintain Nutrition and Healthy Eating Habits
Remember to keep hydrated, with water as the beverage of choice. Maintain a diet that is low in saturated fats and cholesterol. Focus on increased intake of fruits and vegetables, with protein sources including poultry without skin, fish or legumes.
