2019 Rose Society Celebration

Kirkby Memorial Service Award at the Rose Society Celebration

From 1941 until her retirement in 1974, Elinor Kirkby, RN, served as NEBH nurse, administrator, and board member and helped define NEBH as an orthopedic specialty hospital. She was a pioneer in the special way we treat patients at NEBH, and her commitment to creating a warm and highly personalized experience has lived on at the Baptist ever since.

At our annual Rose Society Celebration each year, the hospital gives the annual Elinor Kirkby Memorial Service Award in honor of Elinor’s legacy. The award is given each year to someone who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the mission, vision, and values of the hospital. At this year’s Rose Society Celebration, held on November 7, 2019 at The Country Club in Chestnut Hill, MA, NEBH honored the Currie Family as the recipients of the 2019 Kirkby Award.

The custom of welcoming each patient to the hospital with a red rose was established in 1958 by the late Carl J.B. Currie, a longtime hospital committee member and donor, who felt that every patient at NEBH should receive a flower.

In 2019, Mrs. Barbara L. Currie, and other members of the Currie family, made a generous multi-generational gift to underwrite the rose program so that it may continue for many years to come. We extend our deep thanks to the Currie family for ensuring the future of this unique culture!
