World Cup: Preventing Common Soccer Injuries

Soccer is an extremely popular international sport, and with the World Cup in full swing, it’s an exciting time to be a fan. Like any high intensity sport, there are a number of common injuries that can occur for both the professional and casual athlete.

The most common soccer injuries occur in the lower extremities, including sprains and strains of the ankle, knee and hamstring. Collisions between players can cause a wide range of injuries, including cuts, bruises, and concussions. Additionally, overuse injuries, such as Achilles tendinitis and shin splints can occur frequently.

While some injuries are unavoidable, there are a few precautions you can take to help avoid injury. Following these tips can help you stay safe while on the field.

  • Warm up thoroughly. Cold muscles, tendons and ligaments are more susceptible to injury. After playing, don’t forget to cool down and stretch.
  • Maintain a balanced fitness routine that includes aerobic exercise, strength training, and flexibility.
  • Don’t forget to hydrate.
  • Shin guards are important to wear to help protect your lower legs.
  • Goal keepers should wear gloves to protect hands from injury and improve grip on the ball.
  • If you do become injured, make sure your symptoms are completely gone before returning to play.
