As winter gets into full swing, many of us find ourselves opting to stay inside due to snow, ice, and frigid temperatures. But inclement weather doesn’t mean you have to give up your workout, even if you can’t go outside or get to the gym, you can still exercise. The key is to be consistent! Here are a few ideas on how to meet your fitness goals by getting creative and working out at home.
A good cardiovascular activity to get your heart pumping is jumping rope. If you have low ceilings or high carpet you may not want to use an actual jump rope, instead you can mimic the motions. If you have stairs at home, use them to run up and down or walk two at a time. If you don’t have stairs, use a bench or chair to step up and down, using one leg at time to step up. To make it more challenging over time, add arm movement. You can also turn on the music and dance for a great workout.
For a lower impact cardio workout, try riding a stationary bike or marching in place while pumping your arms
Strength Training and Flexibility
Strength training is an activity that doesn’t require being in a gym and can be done anywhere. You can challenge yourself with non-equipment based exercises such as squats, lunges or pushups. If you don’t have weights or resistance bands for traditional strengthening, then you can also use items you have around the house. For dumbbell weights you could use water bottles to do bicep curls or fill the water bottles with kitty litter. Alternatively you can use cans of food as weights to help strengthen your back and arm muscles. To increase flexibility you could do yoga poses or floor stretches.
Using Technology as a Guide
Technology has made exercising easier because you can work out when it’s convenient for you, and there are a variety of nontraditional methods you can try. You can download Apps to your smartphone and use them as a workout partner and get workout ideas and nutritional information. There are Apps for on demand coaching and training with a variety of workouts to choose from, allowing you to customize your fitness goals. You can also stream workouts that appeal to you.
If you have household chores to perform, these tasks can be another method to assist you in getting in your daily physical activity. For example do tasks manually instead of relying on electronic devices. Wash dishes by hand; when baking or cooking use a whisk rather than an electric mixer.
With these creative ideas, weather won’t be an excuse for you not to exercise.
