Life in Motion

Staying active with the kids or grandkids this February vacation

Sports & Exercise

The winter months can be a challenging time to find ways to keep children or grandchildren busy and active, particularly if they are on vacation and are eager to lounge around the house. Teaching children to be active at a young age provides them with lifelong benefits, and can help them to avoid orthopedic issues later in life. Below are four ways you can keep busy and in some cases even fit some exercise in this February vacation.

Go for a Swim
Although temperatures may be below freezing, you can still pull out your bathing suit and flip flops and head to the pool! Many gyms, community clubs or even hotels offer year-round indoor pool access. Not only will the kids have fun pretending it is summertime, but swimming is a great low impact exercise for anyone with joint issues. The water’s buoyancy supports the body’s weight, which reduces stress on the joints.

Learn Something New
Choose a location for a fun day trip in your city like a science museum, art gallery, library or aquarium. Locations like these will have you walking around and exploring different exhibits while learning something new.

Try a Winter Sport
Ice skating, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and sledding are easy ways to be active outside, and you can rent most of the gear from a sports store or borrow from a neighbor. If you want to get outside without leaving home, going out to play in the snow or having the kids help you shovel will keep everyone entertained and active.

Cook up a Storm
Although you may end up with a mess on your hands, cooking or baking is a great way to spend time with kids and grandkids. They will learn some important facts about math, science, and basic cooking techniques while moving around the kitchen. The best part? You’ll end up with something delicious you can enjoy together afterwards.

Have fun and enjoy the special time with your children or grandchildren.
