Preparing for Winter-Tips for Walking in Slippery Conditions

Sports & Exercise

With cold weather and winter just around the corner, slippery and icy conditions are on the horizon. There are several things that can be done to reduce the risk of falling when slippery conditions exist. Here are some helpful tips from one of our Sports Medicine experts, Dr. Paul Weitzel.

  • In cold temperatures, walk with caution and assume that all wet, dark areas on pavements are slippery and icy.
  • If possible, keep your knees loose and extend your arms to the sides (just like the trapeze artist to increase balance). Do not walk with your hands in your pockets, as this narrows your center of balance and reduces the ability to use your arms for balance if you do slip.
  • Do not take long strides. Try to take short, shuffling steps and avoid quick changes in direction.
  • Wear boots with a thick, non-slip tread sole and wide, low heels. Avoid boots with smooth soles and heels.
