Life in Motion

National Physical Therapy Month

Sports & Exercise

At New England Baptist Hospital, we are 100% devoted to keeping you moving. One way the experts at NEBH are able to do this is through our outpatient physical therapy program. In honor of National Physical Therapy month physical therapists at NEBH discuss some common questions received from patients.

When Should I See a Physical Therapist?

Physical therapy is often used in hopes of avoiding surgery or to rehabilitate following surgery. Additionally, physical therapy can help with a wide range of movement and pain issues, from changing bad posture habits to aiding with a chronic condition or neurological disease. A large portion of what physical therapists treat is related to the normal aging process and “wear and tear” on our bodies, which can include osteoarthritis.

What Treatments You Can Receive in Physical Therapy?

After the initial evaluation, your physical therapist will decide what is appropriate for your treatment.  Treatments may include:

  • Manual therapy techniques, which can include:
    • Soft tissue mobilization, which can break up scar tissue, move tissue fluids, and relax muscle tension.
    •  Joint mobilization, which is used to increase the range of motion and mobility of a joint.
    • A variety of stretching methods.
  • Strength and stabilization
  • Flexibility and range of motion exercises
  • Education on proper posture
  • Workplace training to reduce the risk of injury
  • Education
  • Return to sports

What Are the Benefits of Physical Therapy?
