As summer gets into full swing, many of us are looking for ways to leave the gym and exercise outdoors, or stay active while on vacation. Eric Knopp, a physical therapist at NEBH has a few tips to help get you started.
- Keep hydrated. Exercising outdoors is much hotter than in an air conditioned gym, which can increase the amount you sweat.
- The road is much more demanding on the hips, knees and ankles. Treadmills have more give, so it may take an adjustment period for your joints to get used to the impact.
- Not all surfaces are the same. Keep track of how your joints feel after running or walking on concrete, asphalt or dirt.
- A treadmill controls your speed, but when running in the real world you can alter your speed without noticing. 30 minutes on a treadmill may feel different than on the road.
- Be aware of the weather conditions and plan accordingly. Your run outside can be impacted by sun, air quality and of course, rain. Also, keep in mind the time of day you run. Frequently, running in the morning works out better for people in the summer.
