Coronavirus Preparedness and Response at NEBH

Health & Prevention

NEBH has been preparing diligently for COVID-19 since the outbreak began in January and we are following guidance from our local, state, and federal governments.

No elective surgery will take place at NEBH from March 17, 2020 until at least March 31, 2020. This decision was made in response to Governor Charlie Baker’s orders to cancel elective procedures for two weeks. Any surgery scheduled during that time will be rescheduled.

What can you do to prepare?

Although it is difficult to predict how the COVID-19 outbreak will unfold in the U.S., there are some simple steps you can take to protect yourself and others.

  • Respect your local, state, and federal government’s requests to stay home. This will help prevent COVID-19 from spreading.
  • Adults over 18 years of age with chronic disease and the elderly are at increased risk of serious illness from COVID-19. Risk of serious illness increases with age. People with chronic illness and elderly people should take extra care to protect themselves by staying home and limiting contact with others.
    • Check with your local grocery store about shopping accommodations for older people.
    • Ask your doctor for extra medication and stock up on groceries in case you need to be at home for a prolonged period of time.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer is also effective. Preliminary research shows that COVID-19 can live on hard surfaces for up to 3 days.
  • Cover your mouth, ideally with your sleeve or a tissue, when you cough or sneeze. COVID-19 is passed from person to person through respiratory droplets.

This is an understandably concerning time as public health officials work to stop its spread. We encourage you to keep up-to-date with the CDC’s recommendations and to contact us with any questions or concerns. NEBH is answering the call from public health officials to do what we can to prevent the spread of Coronavirus and help to end this epidemic.  Once the pandemic is controlled and it is deemed safe to do so, we will resume our specialized orthopedic care.
