New England Baptist Hospital’s focus on orthopedic surgery has produced an impressive track record of collaboration among Baptist medical staff and surgeons on hospital-based studies aimed at reducing complications.
Current and planned research includes:
- Assessment of the impact of NEBH’s high-risk surgery list—specifically, defined clinical paths for patients who are diabetic or heavy users of alcohol.
- A feasibility study that considers the mass screening of high school and college athletes—specifically, the use of echocardiograms, a non-invasive test, to identify cardiac conditions, which can then be treated appropriately. This work builds on the Baptist’s long-standing role as the hospital that cares for the Boston Celtics.
- Participation in biological intervention research, as members of the department of medicine will be essential for monitoring the effects, after surgery, of these new cell- and medication-based therapies.
