NEBH Registry

The New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH) Registry collects and stores electronic survey data from NEBH patients and their clinicians. Patients with hip, knee and spine conditions complete surveys about their demographics, work, family and medical history, physical and psychosocial condition, health status, symptoms and expectations for their health. Their clinicians provide clinical information related to their condition. The surveys are completed online from home before each visit or using the computer tablet/PC at NEBH immediately preceding their clinic appointment. The initial survey takes 20-30 minutes while the follow-up surveys take less time.

Registry information collected from patients and clinicians is stored in a secure database and is used to track the patients' treatment and progress. The data are accessed by approved Registry users through a secured website, similar to that used by banks for online banking. With the high volume of orthopedic patients cared for at NEBH, the Registry has multiple advantages. A variety of investigators with wide ranges of research interests will, with approval from the IRB, have access to powerful aggregate data that can help paint a more vibrant picture of the NEBH patient population and provide insight into improving orthopedic patient care. Comparisons can be made using data from similar patients to determine what treatment approaches are most successful. Aside from the research opportunities afforded by the Registry, collecting this information saves time, as the doctors don't have to spend the visit asking questions that may have already been answered. The process of care provided at NEBH can be evaluated with these data, giving us the ability to improve the quality of care for NEBH patients. Data from the NEBH Registry can also be used to inform third party insurers about quality outcomes available to our patients.

The Registry technology was developed by Dynamic Clinical Systems (DCS), using Web-based software known as Integrated Survey System (ISS). ISS data collection is easily and rapidly presented to care givers, facilitates decision making, tailors and maximizes patient-clinician interactions and promotes use of standardized care guidelines. This has been rolled out in the arthroplasty and spine services in 2007 and, in 2008, NEBH and DCS will provide Registry capability to patients and clinicians in the field of Sports Medicine.
