Goals and characteristics
The primary goal of the fellowship is to provide advanced training in adult reconstructive surgery with an emphasis on complex problems, including revision total joint replacement. Though the precepts of Dr. Otto E. Aufranc provide the foundation for reconstructive surgery at the New England Baptist Hospital, there is a unique variety of new approaches and techniques that will provide the Fellow with a multifaceted approach to complex reconstructive situations. Experience with navigation, minimally invasive surgery, osteotomies and arthroscopic management is an important aspect of the fellowship. Because revision surgery accounts for greater than 400 total joint replacements done here, the Fellow will have the opportunity to participate in a large number of cases which reestablish bone substance and utilize unique implant systems. A Bioskills Laboratory provides an opportunity for practical innovation and practice. A mentored clinical research discipline is provided.

Active participation in preoperative planning, intraoperative preparation, and postoperative rehabilitation is required. The Fellow will supervise residents and medical students. Active participation in teaching conferences and symposia is expected.

Presentations and/or articles for publication are expected of the Fellow at the completion of his/her work here. An academic appointment with Tufts University is available during the fellowship year.
