Smoking Policy

New England Baptist is a smoke-free Hospital.
As an Orthopedic Center of Excellence, we are particularly affected by tobacco use as smoking and tobacco use slows healing after surgery. Patients who smoke before surgery have twice the risk of infection of nonsmokers and a smoker's broken bones take almost twice as long to heal. We also believe it is important to take a stand against what we know is the number one preventable cause of disease and premature death. Smoking is a major cause of disease and death due to ailments related to secondhand smoke. Creating a smoke-free environment is
simply the right thing to do.

If You Smoke
If you smoke, we recognize that our smoke-free policy is a challenge, whether you are here for an hour, a day or a week. Talk with your nurse or physician about ways to manage the challenge here and at home. We offer a number of resources, including physician-prescribed nicotine replacement therapies and information on smoking cessation programs. Please note that nicotine replacement therapy is not appropriate for all patients, so please discuss this with your physician. For patients planning to have surgery at NEBH, we recommend that you see your primary care physician several weeks prior to admission to begin a program to help you cope with a smoke-free environment during your hospitalization. Early intervention is the most successful approach to this challenge.

If you smoke, does this mean you cannot come to NEBH, or you must first quit? Absolutely not; you are always welcome here. It simply means that we do not provide designated smoking areas anywhere inside or outside the Hospital. If you want to smoke, please leave NEBH property. The map on this page shows NEBH's property line. For patient safety reasons, patients are never allowed to leave the Hospital's property to smoke.

You Can Quit! We Can Help.
For smokers, not smoking for any period of time is difficult. Once you've managed to be smoke-free at NEBH, why not keep up the good work? We can provide the resources and information you need to quit for good. No matter how long you have smoked, you and your family will immediately experience health benefits once you have quit.

For more information, talk with your nurse or physician.

Cell phones and wireless devices may interfere with the operation of medical equipment. Please turn these devices off while in the Hospital. If you must use your cell phone, please maintain a safe distance of 3 feet from any medical equipment, except in areas displaying the "no cell phone" sign where use is strictly prohibited.
