New England Baptist Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Announce Strategic Relationship for Orthopedic Care

BOSTON –New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH), known as the only hospital in New England specializing in orthopedic care – and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) – ranked nationally in a wide range of medical and surgical specialties – will form a strategic relationship to create one of the nation’s top destinations for orthopedics.

The boards of NEBH, BIDMC, and Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at BIDMC have approved a joint venture that will create a premiere system of orthopedic and musculoskeletal care, education and clinical research. The strategic relationship led and managed by New England Baptist Hospital, will capitalize on the complementary strengths of the hospitals and their respective medical staffs. Both organizations remain independent institutions.

In the initial phase of the joint venture, BIDMC and NEBH will develop a clinical integration strategy and plan for growth.

The agreement brings together NEBH’s clinical expertise and brand as an orthopedic specialty hospital and BIDMC’s depth and breadth in clinical care, teaching and research across a broad range of specialty services – as well as an expanding network of community hospitals and primary care and specialty physicians. The relationship is expected to grow over time.

“This partnership is an exceptional opportunity to combine the expertise of our respective institutions and create greater value for consumers, employers, and payors,” said Trish Hannon, President and Chief Executive Officer, New England Baptist Hospital. “Our two institutions share a common vision for a system of orthopedic care that leads the region and nation, and together we have the capability to ensure that it happens. We are very proud to partner with BIDMC, a highly regarded academic medical center in Massachusetts with a national reputation for high quality medical care.”

“Strong affiliations, in which combined strengths can be leveraged, are critical success factors for our future, said Kevin Tabb, MD, BIDMC’s President and CEO. “We recognize the strength of the NEBH brand for orthopedics and believe that working together, we will provide distinctly better care at lower costs, and in the longer term, we will significantly improve the health and mobility of all the people we will serve.”

“Combining the strengths of these two institutions creates a stronger foundation for a national, premier destination for patients requiring any range of orthopedic services,” said John Richmond, MD, chair of the NEBH Department of Orthopedics. “Together, our hospitals can reach new levels of outstanding patient care, and we can bring the Baptist brand experience to more patients in locations that are convenient for them.”

“We believe this relationship will further enhance patient experience and quality, improve access, create opportunities to develop the skills of orthopedic residents, fellows and newly practicing physicians in the fields of orthopedics, rheumatology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and advance medical knowledge through clinical and basic science research,” added Mark C. Gebhardt, MD, chief of the BIDMC Department of Orthopedic Surgery.

The transaction will be reviewed by the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission, as required under Massachusetts’ 2012 health care reform law. Implementation is pending this review.
