New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH) was pleased to participate in Operation Walk, a private, not-for-profit, volunteer medical services organization which provides free surgical treatment for patients in developing countries. The Op Walk – Boston mission, comprised of volunteers primarily from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Mass General and NEBH, has been working to service the people of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic for several years now.
The representatives from NEBH consisted of Dr. David Mattingly, Chief of Joint Reconstruction, Scott Taylor, Director of Occupational Medicine, Spine Center and Outpatient Physical Therapy, and Jackie McManus, Operating Room Nurse. The volunteers worked in a local hospital, Hospital General, La Plaza de Salude, in Santo Domingo from April 11-April 17. 43 patients, who would otherwise not have access to or be able to afford surgery, received operations, including 61 total joint arthroplasties.
“This year was my third trip, and every year I am so grateful for the opportunity. I am able to get back to basics in terms of providing front line medical care to patients that are truly motivated, incredibly resilient and eternally grateful,” said Taylor. “When you see a bilateral total knee patient get up and climb stairs post op day one you realize this is no ordinary set of patients, surgical expertise, caregiving or personal fortitude. While it is a very long week, I am always sad to leave. I am already looking forward to next year.”
