How Do You Know it is Time For a Joint Replacement?October 25, 2013
Deciding when the time is right to have joint replacement surgery can be a difficult decision to make. Dr. Sumon Nandi, a board certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacements at New England Baptist Hospital has some helpful advice for anyone considering a joint replacement.
Arthritis is the process by which the cushion (cartilage) in joints is destroyed and the bones rub against one another causing pain. Before considering joint replacement surgery for hip or knee pain, a physician must first diagnose you with end-stage arthritis. Following this diagnosis, the treatments below may be prescribed:
- Oral anti-inflammatory medication (ONLY if advised by a doctor)
- Physical therapy
- Steroid injection
- Activity modification
If you have exhausted these conservative measures, are still in pain, and your quality of life is compromised, then it may be time to consider joint replacement. Seek the advice of an orthopedic surgeon specializing in joint replacement surgery.
