The time spent waiting for a loved one to come out of the operating room can be emotionally trying. To help comfort the family and friends of our patients, New England Baptist Hospital has a nurse liaison program that provides a contact person to keep you informed about the status of your loved one.
Every surgical inpatient at the Baptist is assigned an experienced operating room nurse as their liaison. Prior to surgery, the patient will receive a card with a liaisons' name and telephone number on it to give to their family or friends. Patients and their families should feel free to meet with the liaison prior to surgery to discuss the upcoming procedure(s). She can answer many of your questions at this time. In addition, the nurse liaison will keep the patient's family and friends apprised of their progress throughout the day and can be reached by phone or pager at any time if they should have additional questions or concerns. If you have not met the liaison prior to surgery, feel free to contact us by telephone.
Nurse liaisons are available from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Outside of these times, there will be a designated contact person in Patient Access who can answer questions or contact the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) on your behalf.
Patients and their families have expressed great appreciation for this program. Patients are grateful knowing that their loved ones, who are waiting for updates throughout the day, will be kept informed by compassionate and knowledgeable nurses. Family and friends appreciate the personal, face-to-face consultations with someone who can answer all of their questions and calm their fears.
